THE DROP by Michael R. Roskam CAST: Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, James Gandolfini GENRE: US crime drama MISS KITTY SCORE: 4 out of 5 Based on Dennis Lehanes (Shutter Island, Mystic River) novel Animal Rescue, this film is your classic mob crime thriller. Sadly, this is Gandolfinis last film before he died, and his performance reminds us of what a great actor we have lost. His performance in this, however, is eclipsed by Tom Hardys (The Dark Knight Rises) – who plays Bob Saginowski, a simple man of few words who tends bar in his cousins (Gandolfini) pub. He chooses to look the other way when local mobsters use the joint as a temporary bank, but is no fool, and his survival instincts are strong. When a robbery occurs in the bar and his new-found girl and dog are threatened, he does what he feels he has to do. Noomi Rapace (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is also well cast as the timid Nadia. It’s a dark, mobster film, and the lead actors make it compelling viewing.
