THE EYES HAVE IT… Julie Whitman Jones 3/23/2014 I’ve had hazel green eyes all my life, well at least as long as I can recall. They may have been blue as a baby but as long as I recall looking in the mirror at my reflection, my eyes have been green. As a teen, my favorite color eye shadow was dark green. I thought it gave me a mysterious appearance and I felt pretty wearing it with my brown-black mascara and my long brown hair. However, ever since developing chronic dry eye syndrome, I’ve had to say au revoir to my contact lenses and wear glasses. At first I thought they made me look very studious and perhaps they still do but it’s a fact I can’t wear contact lens anymore so I try wearing somewhat stylish glasses, the ones that darken in the light so outside it looks like I’m wearing cool sunglasses. Oh, for the sake of vanity! These cool glasses are called Transitions and a good thing about them darkening is that my un-dressed eyes aren’t as noticeable anymore as wearing almost every product – from eye make-up to face cream bothers my eyes. The only face product I can get away wearing is soy-based moisturizer and Almay concealer. The rest baby, is what you see is what you get!!! The topic for this month’s writing is EYES. What more can one say about them if we keep it literal? For the much more interesting aspect of writing, let’s go beyond the surface and explore some more. Lots of people use expressions like, “I SEE what you mean,” and so on. They don’t actually SEE but they understand what the person was trying to say. My eyes have seen many, many things in the life I’ve lived so far. They have seen people, places, honesty, injustice, and sadness, where they have teared up and encouraged my heart to feel compassion. They have seen how unfair life can be and have also gratefully seen how miraculous and beautiful life is; from the amazing birth of an infant from his mother’s womb or from a soon-to-be-born tiny bird, its hard, shell cracking as its tiny beak explores the outside world from which it sought shelter inside the egg. They’ve witnessed many minute flowers, nestled among the crabgrass, trudged upon by shoes of all sorts; its intricate petals adorned with pale pink and creamy white or the faintest shade of blue. My eyes have seen the glory of the vibrant yellow oxalis as it colorfully dots the green hillsides and lawns. They have seen the amazing orange California poppies that accompany the oxalis and other colorful flowers commonly referred to as weeds which line the highways and glorify the land upon which we live. Mine eyes have seen the majestic blue and endless sky which changes in color from morning to night, offering the earth below a canvas with which to explore; its twinkling stars and brilliant comets, planets and galaxies beckoning our discovery. Fortunate are those who can see with their eyes and feel with their hearts. My eyes, from much use, have grown dimmer these last few years – probably from too much computer use as well as getting older – and I don’t see as sharply as I’d prefer, but I can still see pretty well. When I sleep, I usually dream and I dream in living color. A lot of my sleep dreams are so much more exciting and adventurous than my waking life but I am always thankful to wake up. I am grateful for my eyes, my ears, my sense of taste and smell and being able to feel sensations all over my body. I feel blessed to be able to experience all life has to offer and I’ve got to say, not only do “the eyes have it,” but we all have it. It all depends though on what we choose to do with it. It being… our lives.
