“THE FATHER OF TEXAS IS NO MORE! THE FIRST PIONEER OF THE WILDERNESS HAS DEPARTED” said Sam Houston, President of the new Republic of Texas upon hearing about the death of Stephen F. Austin on this day, December 27, 1836. On Christmas Eve, 1836, Austin had taken to bed with a chill and sank quickly into fever and delirium. Around noon on the 27th, it is said that he rose from his pallet next to the fireplace and proclaimed, Texas is recognized! Did you see it in the papers? and then died. He passed away in the home of George McKinstry located a few miles outside of the then Capital of Texas, Columbia. He was serving as the Secretary of State at the time of his death. He was only 43 years old. Austin died without any offspring, and so gave all his land, titles, and possessions to Emily Austin Perry, his sister. Stephen F. Austins death place location is about one mile north of West Columbia, Texas on Highway 36. In Brazoria County, there is a 72 foot statue of Stephen F. Austin that stands along
