THE FREE SLAVES OF AKWA IBOM STATE The people of Asia were slaves, because they had not learned to pronounce the word no -Winston Churchill Alas, it is a new year. It is 2015. The long anticipated year and i praise Akwa Abasi Enyong for making us partakers of this new year. I had no intention of coming here so soon, but my conscience will not let me play the coward i am not. For someone like me,social network become the only platform where i can air my opinion on issues concerning our polity, with just a hundred naira. Other means are way beyond my reach(financially and politically). Without beating around the bush,i have to state for the umpteenth time that i am disappointed by the attitude of our elders in Akwa Ibom state. I know that everyone is free to hold his political views and opinions, but for public interest such should not be geared towards selfish goals. While charging my battery at a barbing salon today (you know GEJ hasnt given us the light he promised by 2013), a political stalwart in the state walked in with one of these sponsored state dailies in his hand. He shook hands with the barber and exclaimed da nkudoko ke? (didnt i tell you?). The barber merely smiled and continued with his work. He later shook hands with all of us and took a seat. Without being asked,he interrupted our football discussion and started narrated how Akpabio has never lost a fight and how Udom was the right man to succeed him. He went as far as telling us that they are working hard to ensure that udom emerges governor of this state. After his narrative, he was queried as to why he thinks udom is the right man. A question he practically had no answer for. In a futile effort, he started chanting Udoms exploits in the banking sector, his political innocency and worst of all he said he was chosen by the visionary governor of our dear state to consolidate on his highly impressive performance. I couldnt help but laugh. In a state of over 5million persons, only one untested stooge is the right man to take power from the incumbent. Out of respect for him i refused to engage him in an argument where i would have told him what a toy he was. I simply threw this general question to the house; if you find yourself as the governor tomorrow, would you not perform because Akpabio didnt anoint you? suprisingly he replied by saying that some tasks required certain qualities which only udom and Akpabio has among the rest. (Am pretty sure it must be their fair complexion.) He further went on to say that Akpabio did not emerge governor as an Annang man, but as a product of IESD. This to me is a very nonsensical view. If Akpabio did not emerge as an annang man, what brought about this ethnic scramble and rivalry which we never had before before 2007. Along the line i got to discover that it was a propaganda to deny my grandmothers people,THE OROS, of their chance to occupy the number one office, being the third major ethnic group, after Ibibio and Annang (who have both been there). Properly, power has been zoned to Eket Senatorial District, but a candidate from Oro nation would have been a more equitable option than these Ibibio stooge. (mind you, am no fan of zoning at any level) There is also this other friend who has compulsorily added me as a member of eight facebook groups. Groups dedicated to the spread of udom gospel. A chat with his brother revealed to me that they walk away with huge sums of money each time they have their group meetings. He further went on to say that his support for Udom is because he is the highest bidder. Another person, whom i have lost my regards for him (politically though), is obong Bassey Albert. On a serious note, i saw him as the only man that could challenge Akpabio and his stooge. But the day i saw his picture, while escorting Udom to the party headquarters to submit his form and the day he accepted that carrot offer to vie for the senatorial seat of uyo, i lost my political respect for him. Like a friend said, he only thinks about those benefits of power he enjoyed as a commissioner and desires to continue enjoying same as political office holder, period. After making our youths endanger themselves by openly taking up his banner,he secretly went to Abuja for a cup of tea. Like Umana Umana and Bishop Akpan, he could have stood his ground and say no. But the offer was very ravishing. On the whole, one peculiar thing about these people is that they cannot say no even to the exchange of their souls, provided some pecuniary benefits are tied to it. Today Udom is waving the PDP flag, not because he worked harder than any other candidate nor for the fact that he has been tested and trusted, not equally because he was the most popular candidate. He succeeded because rode on the biggest camel, with a lot of cash for the worshippers of money. Let the Akpabio dynasty reign forever, because we are free slaves, said an angry keke rider.
