THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL…a star-studded movie in all its simplicity and quirkiness. Murray Abraham is Zero, a once-upon-a-time pageboy at the hotel. He sits in the now dilapidated, defunct dining room across from one of the few guests played by Jude Law. He begins telling his story and that of his mentor and friend, Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) who was also the concierge of the grand hotel located in a fictitious country eerily similar to well…Hungary. An intricate adventure ensues. Director Wes Anderson is famous for his unique style of movie making, as much for the story as his directing. He writes and directs his pieces, and does it in his unique style. It is only since his last movie, Moonrise Kingdom (I know some would disagree but The Royal Tennebaums did nothing for me), that I began appreciating his sarcasm and dry humor. He does not disappoint this time either. Three quarters of this piece deliver. There were quite a few belly laughs thanks to witty “catch you off guard” type dialogue and scenes. Act three of the movie dips greatly as if the writer/director ran out of steam. You sense he doesn’t know where to go with this and unfortunately it looses the good feeling you had up until the third act. Still…I enjoyed it and definitely feel it’s worth seeing.
