THE HIPNESS FACTOR REDUX #1244 MO MUSIC OF MY YOUTH... Incredible live performance of Billy Cobham with his 3 horn band showcasing his talents as a composer/arranger featuring Glenn Ferris - trombone, Randy Brecker - trumpet, Mike Brecker - tenor sax, Billys fellow Panamanian Alex Blake - electric bass, Milcho Leviev keyboards, John Abercrombie - electric guitar. Both Ferris and Leviev had been veterans of Don Elliss Orchestra. The material would be released on an album entitled SHABAZZ. The sound of this ensemble has its roots in a group called DREAMS that had recorded one album featuring Maestro Cobham with the Breckers but with Barry Rogers on trombone. The format of Billys band directly influenced me in the formation of my octet/nonet Ascension later on. You could make the correlation that Billys band was a direct extension of Art Blakeys type of ensemble. A small drummer led group with a 3 piece horn section, except it was with a 21st century approach. I saw this broadcast in NYC on PBS channel 13 as they would regularly broadcast episodes of this BBC show. Thank God for TV, at least back then. ;) https://youtube/watch?v=59lBywfO_yo
