THE HITCHER (2007) directed by: Dave Meyers (foolish) Based on The hitcher (1986) Too many modern horror movies and movie remakes turn the villain into the main character and the characters into simple victims/ways for writers to show off theyre twisted creativity, and in some respects this film falls into that category but not entirely the movies final act almost makes up for the cliche character decisions that plague the majority of the film, Sean beans performance as the maniacal killer was a little understated in my opinion wether or not this was a deliberate trait of the character or just a flaw in the actors performance i dont know, but I didnt find the character frightening or scary, his reason for killing was mildly intriguing but very scarcely elaborated, while I respect the filmmakers decision not to turn this into one of the many horror remake gore-fests that have come out recently, using extreme violence in only a few scenes to give them far more impact I feel that something was missing in the villain he simply wasnt frightening. maybe thats just Sean bean or maybe its the character not doing enough to indicate his stance as a psychopath. The good things in this film are originality, or as much as can be achieved in homage, along with a pseudo realistic storyline and an ending that wasnt the standard or the expectation, however everything exciting and original was held back by stereotypical horror movie characters, put simply the good parts of this film are not enough to redeem the bad parts. 2 out of 4 stars.
