THE “IRONY” OF GOD’S MERCY Psalm 137 asked Israel to give - TopicsExpress

THE “IRONY” OF GOD’S MERCY Psalm 137 asked Israel to give thanks to the Lord and there was a reason: HIS MERCIES ENDURES FOREVER. It then began to catalogue several things that the Lord did for them and the continuous response is, “his mercies endure forever.” In other words, all that was done by the Lord was in MERCY. And they are many and varied. It includes great wonders of CREATION (4-9). It includes striking of Egypt and bringing them out with strong and outstretched hand (10-12). It includes parting the Red Sea for Israel to cross and making Pharaoh and is host to perish therein (13-15). It includes his leading them through the wilderness (16). It includes striking down of great kings like Sihon and Og (19-20). It includes giving them an heritage, remembering them in their lowly estate, rescuing them from their enemies, and giving food to all flesh (22-25). What a wonderful way God’s mercy operates. It looks ironical. God’s mercy can CREATE, can BRING OUT of bondage, can PART the RED SEA, LEAD through the wilderness, give you an HERITAGE, REMEMBER you in your lowly estate, RESCUE you from your enemies and GIVE you FOOD. Yet God’s mercy can STRIKE Egypt, SINK PHARAOH in the READ SEA, and KILL Sihon and Og, two terrible giants. There are two lessons here. When God shows you his mercy, there is nothing he cannot do for you to lift you up. When he shows you his mercy, there is NOBODY or circumstance that can stand on his way to bless you – He will BULLDOZE IT. Another thing is that when God has shown a man mercy, NEVER TRY TO OPPOSE HIM. You will end up like Pharaoh or Bahsan or Og. God’s mercy is a two edged sword. It can work positively and negatively: positively to bless you and negatively to destroy your enemy. “Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever.” Halleluyah!
