THE JAG - pilot episode editorial written by Joshua Minogue -------------------------- Shannon, The King of the World. The Professor did it again in France, dominated and finished his world champs on the right note after the National Teams Comp (am I the only one who thinks its slightly pointless). He is the Captain and did what captains should, lead by actions not words. Matt Bevilacqua did well to win silver in his home country and what about the trio of Northcliffe young guns next, the future remains bright as shiny coins down at the Maroon Star. Shannon certainly stood out and above the rest as the best of the best and I contest and really want to get this off my chest, (hahahaha enough rhyming) is he the greatest Ironman of all time? ---------------------------- My top 5 Since people are having this conversation anyway, and I feel like it’s my god given right to throw my two cents worth into every conversation, I will now list my top five Ironmen of all time. 5. Darren Mercer – Did it all, Gold, Series and Aussie, and did it well, went by the nickname the Iceman and was born in God’S Country of Thirroul down the South Coast, what more could you ask for??? He beat out a lot of great Ironmen to be in the top five but deserves it. 4. Zane Homes – Again has done it all, but only beats out the man in 5 because he has basically dominated every event at AUSSIES at one point in his career, it can’t be confirmed but apparently he once finished third in the beach flags but was later disqualified for not wearing excessive amounts of compression gear, as is required to be a beachie . ZAP played Raffa to Shannon’s Fed for his entire career and in doing so created some of the most memorable moments in the sport, including the King Kong win, we all love so much. 3. KY Hurst – KING KY, there isn’t much we can say to describe just how good this guy is. Go home and watch Kellogg’s round 4- 2010 at Alex Headlands, the guys a freak. He changed the sport like nobody ever has, he retired an entire generation and forced the next to go swimming 5 mornings a week. I once spent 3 secs wash riding him in the heat of a surf race at Dickey Beach Carnival, it was the hardest I’ve ever done, almost had him too. He could very well be the greatest waterman of all time, and did it all with a smile and sometimes a hangover. 2. TREV – ooooooooooohhhhhhh controversial. If you know him, you’ll understand he doesn’t care and that’s why he is easily one of the most amazing human beings on earth. The man who made Ironman what it is, Kelly Slater said Trevor Hendy inspires him, he almost beat Mitch Buchannan on Baywatch for god’s sake, the guy was that good... I could have put him at one, but I didn’t see him as much as number one guy, sooo that tipped me, If you don’t agree that’s cool, my favourite Ironman is actually Jack Hansen and this is my list so BACK OFF. 1. SHANNON – 8 series, 6 Aussies, 5 Worlds, twenty thousand Aussie gold, got pushed over by Matt Poole and didn’t punch him, is there anything this guy can’t do?? It’s hard to argue with his resume, but it’s not what he has done but how he has done it, which has made me stick him at number one. No Mistakes, never, can you remember the last time the guy screwed up? Nah neither can I, he lets you beat yourself (off?) and then takes his place at the top of the podium. SO THERE IT IS, whinge, yell, send threatening emails or agree its all good, this argument’s pointless, they’re all champions but it’s great to have, maybe the girls next week? ----------------------- Krystal Smith: Always the bridesmaid? How good is Krystal Smith, now World Champion, but can she clean up in this year’s series??? If the swell turns on again in Margrets (which I’m tipping is a snowballs chance on a Surfers dance floor) she will have to be favourite because very few possess the skills she does, BUT does Krystal’s win in the flat signal she may be ready to go the whole way?? --------------------------- TRIAL CASH Can anyone shed some light on who won the Northcliffe sweep at the trial? You would have been a lucky kid to pick the winners in that surf. I will be taking bets on all events throughout the Summer of Surf, come and see me and remember Gambling is more fun if it’s not your money, I mean gamble responsibly. ---------------------------- Lollback Paddle A quality event put on for a quality bloke, everyone should make the trip to Yamba at least once for this epic event of board paddling, there isn’t anything I can say that you haven’t heard or would do it justice. Basically no kooks win the Lollback paddle! Good luck to everyone and enjoy the beers!!! ---------------------------- Goldie Classic With names on the winners trophy such as Caine Eckstien, Ali Day and Josh Minogue there are some quality Ironmen who have made the trip to Redhead in Newcastle for the Goldie Classic, well actually two outta three aint bad. It’s a quality endurance event, and a great venue for something like this, the boys are great for a beer and definitely worth the road trip. Looks like the locals will take this one out, Isaac Morgan is my tip.
