THE LAW OF THE FINGER RING The proper finger on which a ring - TopicsExpress

THE LAW OF THE FINGER RING The proper finger on which a ring should be worn, and the signification thereof, is perfectly understood in England. But in this country, nothing is more common than to see a school-miss with a ring on the wedding finger and a married woman, with twins in her lap, on the engagement finger. The proper finger is as follows: When a lady is not engaged, she wears a diamond ring on her first finger; if engaged, on the second; if married on the third; and on the fourth if she intends to be a maid. When a gentleman presents a fan, a flower, or trinkets to a lady with the left hand, this, on his part, is an overture of regard; should she receive with the left hand, it is considered as an acceptance of his esteem; but if with the right hand, it is a refusal of the offer. Thus, by a few simple tokens, explained by rule, the passion of love is expressed. Wheeling [WV] Daily Intelligencer 23 May 1857: p. 2
