THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD The loving expression of the Shepherd’s Psalm, “The LORD is my Shepherd”, is quite interesting, if not paradoxical. A Lord is not only an Owner, but also a Master – and a Manager for that matter. That should imply that the writer first takes the place of a steward in relation to his Lord. But behold, he says, “The LORD is my Shepherd”. Here he turns the table of responsibility. “As His steward, I am responsible to Him; but as my Shepherd, He is responsible for me”. He identifies the love of his Lord and delightfully expresses the same with pleasantness. His tone carries echoes of joy with it. “The LORD is my Shepherd”, he opines, “For He is my Provider, Keeper, Leader, Coach, Supplier, Guardian, Protector, Comforter and Glory. He indeed is the fairest of ten thousand to my soul!” Spurgeon wrote: Christ’s reign in his Church is that of a shepherd-king. He has supremacy, but it is the superiority of a wise and tender shepherd over his needy and loving flock; he commands and receives obedience, but it is the willing obedience of the well-cared-for sheep, rendered joyfully to their beloved Shepherd, whose voice they know so well. He rules by the force of love and the energy of goodness. O, my soul, hast thou experienced this also with thy Lord? Doth thy heart think so delightfully of thy God? Is His love so firmly established in the depths of thy tender heart? Hast thou willingly and fully surrendered thyself to His perfect leadership? Dost thy heart make merry and feel secure in the presence of thy Maker? Is He thy delight and indeed the Ultimate Wish of thy heart? Hast thou really testified of His goodness and faithfulness to both thyself and the saints around thee? If these be so of thee and for thee, then thou art indeed blessed; rejoice jubilantly and take this Psalm of graceful lyrics to thy lips, for thou hast found true hope, faith and love to secure thee for aye. Remain blessed in the sheepfold of our Lord.
