THE MIDDLE CLASS THINKS TWEETS CAN MAKE PRESIDENT ZUMA RESIGN, BUT THEY WON’T. Welcome to South Africa may I introduce you to our middle class citizens, the hashtag and Dial a Radio Activists ? Though it might be divided in black and white and has different economic challenges this class has a common feeling: hate for the current President of the country, Mr Jacob Zuma. Unlike the average South African that is poor and relies heavily on government social programs this class has some level of financial independence. With this financial independence this class sends its children to private schools, has medical aid to access private health and you will find it in urban areas. To sum things up, this is the class that lives better than the poor South African majority. But this class is the loudest in complaining about government inefficiency and slow delivery of services. Most important this is the class that is most outraged by the president of the Republic. It calls into radio stations expressing its anger. Stations such as Radio702, PowerFM, SAfm and most English talk radios in South Africa are making huge profits by being the SisDolly of the Middle Class who constantly has to listen to Nkandla, e-tolls, corruption and all other complaints. This class starts petitions and circulate them online, it start #tags on Twitter and share, retweet, like and sign up to anything that is opposed to the President. But this is also the laziest bunch of people I have ever known. They do all of these things thinking that its “acting against the president” when in simple English its blowing hot air. The middle class has this crazy assumption that its calls on Radio, its tweets and petitions on line will give them what they want; President Zuma stepping down. This is suppose to be the more educated, more intelligent group of people but I guess its hate on the President has blinded it to few factors. Its Media dominance with calls on radio and tweets are like a person talking looking at themselves in a mirror. Middle Class thinks its talking to other South Africans, but in reality, it is speaking to itself. No one is listening, no one is reading the tweets, no one is signing the petitions but itself. The voting majority of this country is poor, has no source of income other than state provided basic services. It does not have access to twitter, cant sign petitions and can not call in to Radio stations, let alone English radio stations. Unlike the middle class, poor South Africans are not preoccupied with shared hate for the President but shared worry about where their next meal will come from. Unlike the middle class, this group of people is not lazy, it is the most proactive. Over the past years it has taken action into its own hands when crime engulfed the areas it lives in. When water stops flowing from the taps, when clinics are not providing good service or when municipalities are failing, this group does not call into Radio stations or tweet, they make sure the entire country knows and the government feels the pain and responds. When it does this, the middle class does nothing but tweet its anti-Zuma, anti-ANC tweets and self appoints itself as a spokesperson of the poor. While on Twitter the middle class will be blaming Pres Zuma for everything on earth, you will find the poor in protests around the country wearing ANC shirts with Zuma on them. Contradicting the message that dominates calls on radio and tweets and petitions on line. We have seen this in informal settlements such as Bekkersdal, Marikana and other areas, the poor protest, the middle class concludes the poor hate the ANC and its president, when Voting comes, the ANC dominates with votes in those areas, and then the Middle class is left confused. The middle class is seemingly unaware that President Zuma wont resign or step down because of tweets. Tweets failed to BRING BACK THE GIRLS on an international level, how will they help making President Zuma step down domestically ? If you really believe President Zuma should step down why not head to the Union Buildings and camp there so we know its real ? Instead of buying DATA to tweet anti-Zuma tweets, why not buy paint and placards to really express your anger in a more effective way ?
