THE MIGHTY WARRIOR WHO GATHERS THE WICKED. “And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle“ (Revelation 14:14). Here we read of someone that John said “sat like unto the Son of Man.” The individual was sitting upon a cloud. Indeed this verse has given Bible students a cause to spend many hours in research, trying to identify this angel. I join with them. Is this speaking of Jesus, or is it speaking of an angel? Indeed this person resembled the Son of Man. Is this speaking of Jesus? The phrase “Son of man” is used numerous times in the Four Gospels as a Name that Jesus called Himself. However, the Prophet Ezekiel was also called the “son of man” approximately 89 times. The one sitting on the white cloud had a crown of gold upon his head. The altar of burnt incense had a crown of gold. Read Exodus chapter thirty. Jesus is King and He wore a crown of thorns because of His love for us. The event here is the gathering of the wicked from the earth. They will be cast into the great winepress of the wrath of God. In the following verse, from the Book of Matthew, Jesus foretold us of how His angels would gather the wicked and cast them into a furnace of fire. “As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth“(Matthew 13:40-42). The angel held a sharp sickle. The Greek word for “sickle” is (δρέπανον), pronounced “drep-an-on,” from (δρέπω), which is pronounced “drepo,” meaning to pluck. The sickle is a gathering hook, made especially for harvesting, a sickle. A sickle is used in at least two ways. It is used to harvest good grain, and it is also used to cut down harmful weeds. Therefore, we must ask the question, “What exactly is being harvested here?” Is it Saints, or is it the ungodly? We find the answer when we read verse nine, of this chapter, where it tells us that the sickle gathers the harvest into the winepress of God’s wrath. Therefore, this is speaking of gathering the wicked. The Saints of God are not, nor never will be under His wrath. God is our Father and He does discipline us but never in wrath. God loves His children. Many of the ungodly will die during the seven years of tribulation. Is this speaking of those ungodly people who are gathered at the end of the tribulation? This is a good assignment for those who love to research the Scriptures. There are many verses that will help you to come up with an answer. This should keep you busy for some time if you wish to research it. I many add that this angel, was sitting on a cloud. Perhaps this, along with other verses from Revelation, is where today’s artists get the idea of painting pictures of angels upon clouds.
