THE MISTAKE OF 1999 IN ARONDIZUOGU It was like these in 1998 at the buildup of 1999 election, when one of our illustrious sons in the person of GREG Mbadiwe had almost clinch the gubernatorial seat of Imo State government house. He had all the opportunities at his disposal, and we thought that we were there already. But something strange happened; another of our illustrious son came out from the blues and scuttled our chance of development with the support of strangers and some of our people whose duty is nothing but “we must pull him down by all means”, “why must it be the son of Mr. A”, why must it be this small boy of yesterday” etc. The painful part of this, is not that we lost this golden opportunity to a total stranger who could not site a single project in Arondizuogu as a whole during his 8 yrs tenure as a governor, but that our people were deceived by the utopian exaggeration of the political prowess of our son who denied us that golden opportunity, and promised to draw down the sun & moon on earth for us alone, he promised to build bridges for us alone in the absence of rivers. All these promises were made, bought and swallowed hook line and sinker simply because he wanted to show a fellow brother that he was a political heavy weight, he wanted to teach a brother a political lesson in other to establish his godfatherism empire, he wanted to be the only light in our community, he wanted to be the only tree in our forest against the political/ developmental yarning of our community. This selfish act really rubbed us a lot and it was the major reason why we are still where we are now. Yet many are still indulging in the act of “if it’s not me, nobody else will get it”, “it’s better an Isu man get it instead of my brother”. , and those that suppose to call them to order now seems to be their cronies. But those that still indulge in this selfish act have not yet understood life and its principles. They are yet to understand that that particular act which I called “Mistake of 1999” later showcased its ugly face in 2003, when our entire community lost and mourned one of our best illustrious HERO who believed that a tree can make a forest, who connived with strangers to rub us our golden opportunity. Well, my point is that we should try to give support to our brother who is representing us at Fed. House of Representative now,(in the person of HON. DR. IFEANYICHUKWU EDDIE MBADIWE) bearing in mind that if we repeat the same mistake we made in 1998, that history will not recognize us as wise people and posterity will not forgive us for not creating a fertile environment for future. I always wonders why our people always be voting for our neighboring towns during elections our brothers are contesting for. Why should we always be kicking against and blocking the political chances and opportunities of our brothers in every political race? When shall we stop coming out in mass to contest for a political seat which we knew that the so called Isus’ are interested in? When shall we unite and become one people with one mind and one voice, especially when it comes to politics. To this extent, I appeal to all of us to ward off the idea of thinking that some individuals are unimportant or unwanted in our family or community, because lives are affected directly or indirectly due to our relational and complementary nature, seen in our singularity and socially. We should also learn how to appreciate and value what we have within our reach. Our people do not realize the importance of what they have until they lose hold of it. Hence we made the mistake of 1998. Truly our attitude towards understanding the importance of what we have is inborn, but we have the powers to manipulate it. Frankly speaking, it is good to hope for something new, better and greater than what we have, but we should be reasonable in doing so. Actually, the main cause of not minding or realizing the importance of what we have until it is lost, is due to egocentric nature of our people. Many people in our community today attribute to themselves the idea that they are wonderfully made and owned with talents that can never be found in other persons. Such person finds it extremely difficult to appreciate the skills, worth, values and abilities of their fellow brothers & sisters. Their myopic and false self esteems make them to believe that they can do without others, unless they are ready and willing to follow them passively without contributions and questions. The same abhorrent ideas makes them not to value others’ material possessions and contributions in our town, hence the generally accepted bad parlance that (“Izuogu na- ahuri mbuba n’ oku”) Izuogu roast their heroes. There are many disadvantages of not appreciating the worth and values of our brothers, until we lost it. It hits us every day, and not until we expunge such short-comings in our daily lives, many more years ahead shall still be termed “WASTED YEARS” and truly our posterities shall never forgive us.
