THE MYTH OF SHAREHOLDER VALUE Corporations do not exist only to serve the interests of shareholders. That myth originated in the 1970s. Shareholders rarely exercise effective control. Claiming accountability to them serves the interests of chief executives who don’t really want to be accountable to anybody. Corporations have legal, contractual and financial obligations, in the hierarchy of which the claims of shareholders come last, not first.
