THE NATIONALIZATION OF THANKSGIVING AND A “NEW LIBERTY” – No - TopicsExpress

THE NATIONALIZATION OF THANKSGIVING AND A “NEW LIBERTY” – No matter how disturbing to antediluvian liberals like myself, the candor of this state-worshiping New Jersey columnist, praising the daylights out of Abraham Lincoln and the nationalization of Thanksgiving, is refreshing in its honesty. bit.ly/1dDaHlO Christopher Ziegler explains that “prior to the Civil War, freedom was primarily understood in the purely libertarian sense of freedom from government power. “ But President Lincoln used the moral stench of a profound government failure, slavery, to stage a bloody power grab. In exchange for its subjects power, the State would not just be their protector, but their liberator. Government would protect and liberate its revenue units from society, societys institutions and themselves. Lincoln frankly admitted this was something new and different: “We all declare for liberty....but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing.” Karl Marx understood and gushed (an endorsement which positively thrills Comrade Ziegler). But Lincoln knew that his new collectivist notion of liberty “could not be forged by the pen alone,” it had to be “tried by war and decided by victory.” And it was the victory at Gettysburg, and with it -- the victory of the “new liberty” which inspired Father Abraham to nationalize Thanksgiving. bit.ly/1dDaHlO
