THE NEW YORK TIMES recently ran an article titled, Religious Conservatives Embrace Pollution Fight nytimes/2014/07/31/us/religious-conservatives-embrace-proposed-epa-rules.html?_r=0 WE SALUTE THOSE RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVES WHO HAVE THE INTELLIGENCE AND STRENGTH OF WILL to speak out for protection of the environment, even to the point of acknowledging the science of global warming. Unfortunately, the majority of religious apologists still dont, or wont, acknowledge the ironic connection between anthropocentrism and its danger to human welfare. The great majority of Christians, and followers of other theistic religions, are still tied to the idea that the Earth is a disposable tool for humans use. But these good people have made the first leap toward reason-based prioritizing; their selections from the endlessly contradictory passages of the Bible at least conform to a degree to the realities faced by planet Earth. Their activism and willingness to speak out encourages us. Unfortunately their religious faith still hamstrings them, preventing the next big leap. Selective readings of the Bible only allow one to see a two dimensional version of the current catastrophe. Their potential is stunted. Many undoubtedly continue to support conservative politicians who work diligently and proudly to keep us in an environmental dark ages. Most still cant see beyond the effects of environmental degradation on human animals to an equal concern for other species. And almost all, we are fairly certain, would never acknowledge that human overpopulation is a problem, let alone the foundational crisis of our planetary ecosystem. The minds of such people are too vital to waste; their willpower is too rare to remain shackled by the chains of religious doctrine. WE INVITE THEM to RENOUNCE, DISCOVER, EMBRACE, as discussed in our first sermon of June 2013 at lordofbeasts/blog/index.html. Plunge off of that cliff, friends. Let yourself drop deep into the frightening but exhilarating sea that is real life--life as an animal, a beast with an awareness that is all the more precious for its transience.
