THE NIGERIAN Nigerians! Sigh. Yes, we have a bad govt and a bad system. But I think we the people are somewhat worse! First, our appreciation of issues is suspect. I listen to many of our opinions on radio and social media. It is a typically Nigerian thing to read ONLY headlines and form a very strong opinion based on that alone! The recent slew of court judgments call to mind...I read so much disinformation I just shook my head. Second, our press which is an integral part of us, seems determined to lead us astray with the yellowest type of journalism ever seen in the history of this country. Im doing a post on our press today... We seem to have more mercantile sharks than real journalists today. Pity. Third, even when we fully appreciate the issues, the Nigerian will then put on his lenses of religion and tribe. Usually when that is done, the issues go to pieces, nothing will come of it. Fourth, when the issue is of such gravity that it escapes the perverting view of the ethno-religious lenses and strikes home to where it hurts the Nigerian most, he will do one of 3 things: 1) Curse most heartily and invite God to punish govt officials bla bla bla...and do nothing. Or 2) He will rationalize...Afterall it didnt start today...and do nothing. Or 3) He will pick up his phone or laptop and type a few angry lines just as Im doing now...and also do nothing. Just as Ive done nothing. No matter what happens to us as a people, we do nothing. Sigh. Im a little tired...
