THE NUMBERS CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE TERRIFING FOR OUR VETERANS… 1 in 3 returning troops are being diagnosed with serious Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; however, less than 40% will seek help! Previous 2009 reports present record breaking numbers as it listed 245 Soldiers killed themselves, while on Active Duty because of PTSD; however, 1 out of every 5 attempt suicide daily while on Active Duty. Later reports from the Department of Defense suggest that suicide deaths began to surpass combat related fatalities. But 2013 reports suggest the statistics are even worse, 4 years later as the suicide numbers between our Active Duty Members and Veterans continue to climb past 22 Veteran suicides daily. Because of these numbers and a total of 2.3 Million Service Men and Women, who served in Iraq and/ or Afghanistan, 200,000 Military marriages have been broken and of that number 27,000 were in 2009 alone, because of complications with PTSD and/ or extended services within the theater of operations. Furthermore, 1 out of 3 Veterans are homeless Nationwide, 2,500 alone within the Houston area. Making the Houston area the 2nd largest population for our Veteran Community, exceeding San Antonio, Texas and San Diego, California of total retirees, residence, and homeless Veterans. These numbers continue to suggest the lack of importance our Brothers and Sisters in Arms face; furthermore, the continuing struggle our Veterans face daily.
