THE OLD HAT In bygone years when all seemed well -and simpler days were planned and led The path was known, the way made clear; I wore a hat upon my head. The ribbons fresh from youthful blush The charming tilt of loving wife A mother’s love- the sturdy rim And lustered hues of woman’s pride. Through wind-blown storms and hearty gales -the crushing lows and tossing highs The hat held firm though tattered; torn The hat grew old…but it was mine. The ribbons changed, the tilt now gone A band of black encircled round In havoc walked my head thus bowed But that hat never touched the ground! Though many urge me to consider: “Deny your hat and see our view.” My woman’s pride and lustered colors Keeps the hat that wears my truth. Lee O. McGee 12.21014
