THE OLDEST SHIPWRECK IN THE WORLD IS FOUND IN HISARONU BAY - NEAR MARMARIS - SOUTHWESTERN TURKEY - ( 2000 B.C. ) One of the most important ancient shipwrecks in the world was found in HISARONU BAY near MARMARIS . The shipwreck is known as the oldest ever shipwreck in the world and it is estimated to date back 2000 B.C. The underwater archaeological studies were only started in 1960s... The sponge diver Mehmet ÇAKIR has seen a shipwreck in ULUBURUN in 1982 near KAŞ in ANTALYA, southern TURKEY. The Turkish Underwater Archaelogical Team had started long precise researches and archaeological divings in the ancient shipwreck site in ULUBURUN - KAŞ, in southern TURKEY ... The precise archaeological dives and researches took like 11 years in ULUBURUN – KAŞ and they’ve eventually found the oldest shipwreck and the things belonging to the ancient ship ... The ancient ship which was built of Cedar Wood was dated back late Bronze Age - 1300 B.C. 15 m ( 49.5 ft) long and 5 m ( 16.5 ft ) width ship was carrying approximately 20 tons of load which belonged to Mediterannean Civilizations … 10 tons of copper and 1 ton of tin were the main goods of the ship load. 150 units of clay jar were also found as well as ostrich eggs ... The underwater archeolgical team scientists were really surprised to see all these in the ship wreck in ULUBURUN - KAŞ - TURKEY !... The ship wreck found in HISARONU – MARMARIS is apparently much older than the one in ULUBURUN - KAŞ as it’s 4000 years old. They found the first ever Bronze Age Anfora in good shape and intact from the shipwreck in HISARONU - MARMARIS ... . Underwater archaeological researches and dives in Turkish Aegean Sea and in Turkish Mediteranean Sea were started by 9 Eylül University - İZMİR to cover from DATCA PENINSULA - Aegean Sea in the west as far as ANTALYA coasts in the south - Mediterannean … The scientists of Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology from 9 Eylül University - İzmir, who are doing all these research programs on a School Boat called Bodrum, have found more than 10 new shipwrecks from ancient civilizations in Turkish coastline… The shipwreck they found just 50 m ( 165 ft ) off shore and 30 m ( 99 ft ) depth in HISARONU BAY – MARMARIS has changed the world history of underwater archaeology, as this shipwreck is literally the oldest one in the world so far dating back 2000 B.C.
