THE PATCH PROJECT WINTER 2014 CALL FOR ARTISTS DEADLINE: March 31st, 2014 The PATCH Project provides artists (like you!) with opportunities to exhibit their work in public - raising their profile while transforming Toronto’s streets. We partner with land developers to showcase the work of local artists around construction sites and get them the exposure they need to move their career in the arts forward. PATCH can help YOU: develop your portfolio get paid for exhibiting your work connect with established artistic mentors build a stronger foundation to launch your career Our city has millions of feet of construction hoarding that can be the site of your next work of art (or a reproduction of your existing work)! Take advantage of this unique opportunity to get your work noticed, and become part of a community of young artists while you’re at it. What is PATCH? The PATCH (Public Art Through Construction Hoarding) Project installs permanent and temporary art in underused spaces, like construction sites. We collaborate with local artists, landowners, and property developers to create an ongoing exhibition that not only beautifies the streetscape, but strengthens community ties around our installations. PATCH is a project of the STEPS Initiative, a non-profit organization that uses art to connect people to public spaces. Over the past year, our team has managed numerous public art installations across the city, including the World’s Tallest Mural in St. James Town, and more recently, an installation in Alexandra Park with Toronto Community Housing and Tridel Corp. What Do We Do? find potential sites for public art recruit Toronto area artists liaise between artists, property owners / developers, and construction companies manage the logistics of making this happen! Who Are PATCH Artists? We collaborate with a wide range of creative professionals who vary dramatically stylistically and thematically. You can find a selection of our current collaborating artists on our Selected Artists Page. We are looking for artists who live or work in the Toronto area, and who are interested in exhibiting their work in the public realm. You should have a proven capability to produce work of the highest quality and proven ability to undertake projects of similar scope to those of PATCH. Generally, we have two calls for artists per year (one in the winter and one in the summer). Applications can be submitted online here (no hard or emailed copies will be accepted) and are juried by a review committee with includes representatives from the arts and urban development industries. As part of this process, applicants are required to upload five (5) pieces of visual support material, an artistic CV outlining their relevant experience, as well as a letter of reference. Submissions which meaningfully engage with issues such as reclaiming public space, sustainable living, promoting cultural dialogue, multiculturalism and civil engagement are highly encouraged; though, applicants whose work does not thematically engage with these ideas are still welcome to apply. Compensation: We recognize the importance of financially compensating artists for their work. Artist fees for reproduced images will be in accordance with the scale of the reproduction, while fees for newly commissioned or community-engaged works will vary on a project-to-project basis.
