THE PHRASE I LOVE YOU Is the phrase I love you over used and abused? Can it be used as a tool of manipulation? Is it used too casually? The phrase I love you, used to have a very deep meaning and now it has a sense of connotation to it. I think the phrase is highly over used. I know that I am guilty of it myself. I find myself telling many people; I love you. In passing, in writing or while talking. I use it as more of an expression of deep like and gratitude, but not always do I mean the real love. I may say: I love the ocean. I really enjoy it and want to be there as much as possible and it does something deep down in my soul, but do I actually love the ocean? Or am i simply over using this phrase? Is I love you abused? Oh yes, far too many times. If a person hurts you emotionally or physically and then says: Im sorry, I love you, that to me is a tool of manipulation. How can you hurt me and yet say, I love you? If the hurt was not intentional, then i accept it. However, if the hurt was intentional and could have been avoided, I wont accept it, as it comes across as a form of manipulation. You are saying it to soften the other person and get what you want and then you will just do it again. That to me is not love. So we say it way too much and way too casually and when we do this, it loses its depth and beauty. For me, I am going to begin to really unravel the phrase I love you and make sure that when I say it, I say it for all the right reasons and that I feel it in my heart. Otherwise the meaning gets lost in translation.
