Leadership should be revolving; now it’s a Tonga, next is a Lozi and later Luvale, then at least we can give it back to the Bembas who have dominated it for a long time.” We have a problem with this. However, Munkombwe’s tribal statements would be less worrying if immediately they were made, Hakainde, who spoke after him at the UPND rally in Choma, repudiated them. But no one at that rally criticised or dismissed Munkombwe’s tribal and regional statements. They were even in some way embraced and supported by other speakers who followed him. And Hakainde himself publicly welcomed him: “Thank you very much for endorsing Hakainde Hichilema, I want to tell you that your endorsement is not in vain, your endorsement will be respected and used in a diligent manner, in an efficient manner, in an effective manner. That is what we are doing.” At no point did anyone from the key leadership of the UPND, including Hakainde himself, repudiate, denounce Munkombwe’s tribal and regional statements. They instead embraced him. This renders Dipak’s repudiatory statement useless and meaningless. Why were those tribal statements not denounced? The answer to that will provide an explanation why Munkombwe’s tribal and regional statements are not being denounced today. It will also explain why, despite making such tribal and regional statements, Munkombwe has continued to share a campaign platform, without any difficulties, with Hakainde. It will not be wrong for anyone to conclude that the political outlook of Munkombwe is something that is common in UPND and it is the shared ideology of its leadership, cadres, members and supporters.
