THE RECOMMENDED ETIQUETTES FOR FIRST TEN DAYS IN DHUL-HIJJAH All praises are due to Allah Who decrees and executes all affairs, He disposes of affairs according to His knowledge. He preordained the beginning and the end of all matters. My praise unto Him knows no end. I testify there is no god but Allah alone, He has no associate, He manifests signs of His Oneness firmly. And I testify that Muhammad (pbuh) is the servant of Allah sent to all mankind. May Allah bestow peace and blessings on him (pbuh), his families, his companions whom Allah had granted piety to their souls. Thereafter, O servants of Allah, fear Allah who creates what He wills and honours for preference what He wills. He created paradise and preferred Firdaus, He created humans and preferred the believers, among believers He chose the prophets above them, and He preferred the men of high determination among the prophets and made Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) their leader. He also created the Earth, preferred Makkah, He created the days and preferred Ramadan of the months therein, He also preferred the Friday, and the night of majesty and the first ten days in Dhul-Hijjah which is closeby. The first ten days in this month is a great period with blessings and meritorious rewards for good deeds and positions, and the opportunity to witness the house of Allah in this period for those with the ability. As hajj is compulsory once in a lifetime for those with the capacity, however, partaking in the reaping of blessings in the first ten days of Dhul-hijjah is all inclusive for both pilgrims and non-pilgrims. Ibn Taymiyah was asked concerning the most rewarding between the first ten days in Dhul-Hijjah and the last ten in Ramadan, and he said: “The days in first ten in Dhul- Hijjah is better than that of Ramadan, while the nights of Ramadan is better than those of Dhul-Hijjah.” Some of the Values of the Ten in Dhul-Hijjah. 1- Allah made it an object of oath and that underscores its status. 2- Allah situates it within one of the sacred months and during the period of hajj 3- Allah perfected and completed Islam in one of the days; the day of Arafah. The verse which explains the completion of the religion- Q5:3, was revealed while the Prophet was at Arafah. Allah says: (اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم وأتْممت عليكم نعمتى ورضيت لكم الإسلام دينا ) المائدة 3) (This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.) Umar said:”I surely know when it was revealed and where. It was revealed on Arafah day on a Friday” 4- It is one of the Known Days where the remembrance of Allah have been enjoined. Allah says: ويذكروا اسم الله فى أيام معلومات على ما رزقهم من بَهيمة الأنعام ) الحج 28 (That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals.) Q22:28 The Prophet (pbuh) corroborated this stand by describing it as the best of days on earth. Jaabir narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “The best days of this world are the days of the ten- that is the first ten days in Dhul-Hijjah. They asked him: “And even not comparable to that whatever of such spent in the cause of Allah? He replied: “Not even such days spent in the cause of Allah, except a man that get his face covered in the dust” in another hadith he said: “There is no day most honourable before Allah where deeds therein are most beloved to Allah as these days” that is the first ten days. The companions said: “O Messenger of Allah what about Jihad in the cause of Allah? He replied: “Not even Jihad in the cause of Allah, except a man who went out with his life, wealth, and return with any of those” (Bukhari) 5- There lies also the day of Arafah which is the day of the greatest hajj, a day of forgiveness, and a day of emancipation from hell. Therein is also the night of Muzdalifah. 6- Within these day also lies the day of slaughtering which some scholars agree to be the best day in the year. On the day of slaughtering is the most of the rites of pilgrimage. The values are numerous, therefore a Muslim must strive to maximize the opportunity that comes with it. Some of the recommended deeds in the days are as follow: 1- Sincere repentance 2- Establishing the five daily prayers accordingly, with early arrival for solat and being in the first row. Engage in numerous nawafil 3- Fasting. It was reported by Hunaidah bn Khalid from some of the wives of the Prophet (pbuh) that the Prophet (pbuh) fast nine days of Dhul-hijjah, tenth of Muharram, and three days in every month” (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Nasaai) 4- Going for Hajj and Umrah. The Prophet said: “From one Umrah to another is expiation for was exist between the two of sins, and the acceptable hajj has no other reward than paradise” (Muslim) 5- ‘Itikaaf (seclusion in the mosque) 6- Celebrating the praises of Allah. the prophet said: “There is no day most rewarding and beloved before Allah than these ten days, increase therein with chanting Lailahailla Allah, Allahu Akbar, and Alhamdulillah” (Ahmad). Bukhari reported that Ibn Umar and Abu Hurairah do go to the market places during this period to praising Allah, while people follow them in the practice” 7- Increasing in prayers and seeking forgiveness 8- Slaughtering of recommended animals on the day of slaughtering. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “There is none of the good deed of any man that is mostly beloved to Allah as slaughtering” (Tirmidhi). Sheikh ‘Uthaimeen said: ‘good deed’ refers to all kinds of good deeds: solat, charity, fasting, remembrance, …. etc
