THE SAPA (STUDY, AWARENESS, POLITICAL INCLUSIVENESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY) APPROACH TO FIGHTING CORRUPTION. Opposed to the status quo where everyone lays the blame for corruption on the government, the genesis of corruption is within the populace; firmly rooted in the ground. Climbing a tree never starts from the branches and the youth have to bring the fight against corruption, back to the common man; in the basic units of society. This course of action should follow an SAPA (Study, Awareness, Political inclusiveness, Accountability) format as stipulated below; STUDY: The youth should take a deliberate, concerted and streamlined effort to understand the concept of corruption by studying and analyzing existent literature on corruption, participating in anti corruption forums, attending workshops and above all understanding the various legal provisions against corruption. This can lead to objectivity and critical thinking amongst the young regarding corruption as its gravity and its impact on society is well comprehended. Such a well-informed view point is necessary for effective resolution as opposed to the current abstract understanding of corruption held amongst the young. AWARENESS: Following a proper study of corruption, the youth must adopt a high level of vigilance in ensuring awareness in the fight against corruption. This should be done through anti corruption forums, radio talk shows, media briefings and anti corruption campaigns so as to foster an in depth understanding of corruption and its dangers amongst the populace. The youth are better suited to play the role of anti corruption ambassadors in way of time and vigor. POLITICAL INCLUSIVENESS: Having fostered eminent awareness about corruption and its dangers to society, the youth should embark on a push for political inclusiveness so as to walk the talk. This should be done in way of youth taking on positions of leadership right from the local Council level to the national legislative machinery the parliament. This way, the young can be instrumental in the fight against corruption through exemplary leadership. ACCOUNTABILITY: Having taken center stage in the political schema, it then should be the duty of the youth to ensure and demand for accountability from those in positions of leadership. In this, the effort of the youth in political self-determination should not only stop at the polling station. The youth have to keep leaders in check for every step they make and hold them equitably accountable for example in way of financial accountability. Short of such equity, the young have to through their constitutional powers of the electorate call for the immediate withdraw of stray leaders from office. The youth have continued to show their endless influence in society, though this influence has been manipulatively used. However, given the SAPA approach above, the impact of the young in the fight against corruption is eminent and can’t be given a blind eye.
