THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY… L.A. DISTRICT ATTORNEY DEBATE/JULY 2012 (2) We were lucky enough to get there early and we took a very good spot midway up with the rest of the media. It was rather fun to have KTLA and KTTV to my right and KCBS/KCAL & KCET to my immediate left. The whole group was great and we all helped each other out throughout the evening. The “big thing” technically was that we learned there are AUDIO BOXES that we can plug our cameras/audio equipment into that will allow us to get crisp sound from each person at the podium below, but being this was our first mass event, we didn’t have the correct cables to plug in. We used our shotgun mic which worked fine, but still got that “roomy sound” that we could have lived without. No matter, nothing was going to stop us from covering this debate, but I will tell you that as soon as we returned to base, we were on the horn with our good friend, Dennis Lahti, who is a camera op at KNBC Channel 4. We got schooled on those cables which were added to our packs less than a week later. As far as the debate went, the candidates came in and did their meet & greets. It wasn’t long before legendary newsman Warren Olney was calling everyone to order. This particular debate, shall we say, was owned by Alan Jackson as he had the backing of COPS for his campaign. Alan knew that and had a great deal of confidence coming in. Jackie, on the other hand, was her usual calm and cool self. THIS WOULD BE THE FIRST TIME NWLA’S CHIN THAMMASAENGSRI WOULD USE THE SLOGAN “SHOWDOWN IN DOWNTOWN.” That slogan would define ALL of our local political coverage of this race and the later Mayor’s race of 2012. youtube/watch?v=e1gU--UbzlQ
