THE TASK BEFORE CHRIS OKEWULONU It is no longer news that the deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha is concertedly aspiring to be the Governor of Imo State. It also needs not further emphasizing that the gentleman from Mbutu in Aboh-Mbaise L.G.A of the State is one of the most experienced and most equipped politicians for this job. What is news however, is that Emeka Ihedioha has handed over the job of making his aspiration a reality to a man with a track record of political successes and administrative landmarks. I cannot deceive myself by thinking that ousting the incumbent Governor of the State will be an easy task. Before, we get to that main task, it is also important that the chief driver of Chief Ihediohas aspiration is reminded of the immediate, but tough task which is the PDP primaries, which by all verifiable snippets will hold before we bid October farewell. For a political Party that is not familiar with being in the opposition, but has suddenly found itself in the infamous angle of opposition in Imo State. This makes it understandable that the PDP is determined to win the governorship of the State, and for them to do this, they need to ensure that they present the best and most marketable individual who will be able to not only defeat the incumbent in the main election, but will also have the strength of character and political will to repair the enormous damages which the incumbent government has inflicted on both the economy and infrastructure of the State. There are not a few of us who are confident that Chief Ihedioha has these capacities, yet, Chief Chris Okewulonu has the primary responsibility of convincing both the leaders and members of the Party that Ihedioha has what it takes to not only win the State for the Party but also implement the Partys people oriented manifestos for the good of all the people in Imo State. Chief Chris Okewulonu must have understood that his appointment is not a come and eat appointment, it is purely a come and work kind of appointment. With his rich and enviable resume in political and administrative exploits, Chris Okewulonu is no doubt a fitting peg for the round hole. He is the only person who can stop himself from succeeding in this onerous duty of ensuring that this prepared leader from Mbutu becomes the Governor of Imo State come 2015. The new Director-General of the Ihedioha for Governor Campaign Organization should bear in mind that with this appointment, he does not only owe Ihedioha and his campaign organization a debt of success, but the entire people of Imo State will be waiting to see him deliver this green cap man, who they have come to admire and love so much. Therefore, if Chris Okewulonu fails to deliver Ihedioha as the Governor of Imo State come 2015, he would have failed a larger populace of Imo people, who are anxious to enjoy the focused, responsible, truthful, creative and people driven leadership which Chief Emeka Ihedioha promises. A Director-General of a Campaign organization is the chief strategist of the campaign set-up. And the work of a chief strategist is a tough one. Your entire life and activities must be dedicated to creating new ideas, refining old ones and discarding obsolete ones; all geared towards the success of the project. The Director-General brings in the right people to the center-point of the project with whom he will drive the project and ensure its success. It is also the duty of the Director-General to ensure that certain individuals who for one reason or the other may not have been favorably disposed to the project are reached out to and convinced to join hands with other members of the team for the success of the project. As a strategist, he should also be well cooked in the art of high powered negotiation and horse-trading, so that when the push comes to shove, he will not be thrown off balance. A fine negotiator must always be on top of the game, he must not be knocked into a weak corner. Of course, I cantrust Chief Okewulonu on that. But, he must also guard against being over-confident, for there is no aspirant who is weaker than the other. As a bridge builder, the Director-General must focus more on attracting friends to the project and strive as much as possible to eschew the possibility of enmity within and outside the camp. He is to ensure that all staff and friends of the campaign organization are happy and motivated for maximal productivity. He is a troubleshooter, who sees the trouble and nips it long before it becomes an issue. As the chief-driver, he needs to understand that he cannot be the only driver, he must cooperate with his co-drivers for the overall success of the campaign. If he tries to drive it all alone, the vehicle will surely crash either as a result of fatigue or avoidable errors. Chief Chris Okewulonu was very successful in his last outing in a similar assignment. As the Imo State campaign coordinator for the Goodluck/Sambo election in 2011, he was able to galvanize about ninety five percent of Imolites to cast their votes for the Goodluck/Sambo ticket. If he could do that in 2011 for the President, he will have no excuse not repeating the same feat come 2015. In fact, he has less job this time around; Chief Emeka Ihedioha only needs a little more than fifty percent of the PDP delegates for him to clinch the Party ticket and about the same percentage of Imolites for him to win the main election. This is achievable, if the right ideas are honed and the right steps taken. Goodluck to the Director-General, Goodluck to Imolites, Goodluck to Imo, our dear State. IMO GA ADI MMA OZO!
