THE TEN SCROLLS = TEN SECRETS OF SUCCESS The exceptional small book by Og Mandino, “The Greatest Salesman in the World” is a fable that is supposed to give the background of St. Paul’s powerful apostoleship. He tells of the 10 secrets for man’s success written on scrolls and handed down by a series of self-made salesmen who had generous hearts. The scroll, as the story goes, finally came to Paul for revelation to the world. They are suitable formulae for living the life and teachings of Jesus. If you read them carefully and provide your own meditation you can see in them some of the things that Paul preached to others and that led him to be, in Jesus’ behalf, His greatest salesman of all time. You will find some help in facing each day with hope. Paul’s inspired words fit the 10 secrets. SCROLL I “Today I begin a new life.” Paul said, “Put on the new man” (Eph. 4:24). How often we begin a day without enthusiasm, perhaps, even with regrets and fear. We carry the failures and miseries of yesterday into the new day. What a waste of time and emotion. Each day is filled with new opportunities, fresh graces, and its own promises of success to those who use them. SCROLL II “I will greet this day with love in my heart.” Paul said, “To those who love God, all things work together for good” (Rm. 8:28). No muscle, no nuclear force, now power on earth has the strength of love. Love can reach man’s heart. It can make enemies into friends and friends into brothers and sisters. Love of self, self-respect, moreover, can lift us out of smallness and bitterness into joyful and confident people of God. SCROLL III “I will persist until I succeed: Paul wrote, “Forgetting what is behind, I strain forward to what is before me. I press on towards the goal” (Phil. 3:13). Each day we are tested in some way. Failures do not blot out the goal, but challenge our determination to succeed. SCROLL IV “I am nature’s greatest miracle” Paul wrote, “By the grace of God I am what I am” (ICor. 15:10) And the Psalmist stated in ages past: “You have made man a little less than the angels” (Ps. 8:5). Each one of us is unique. Human life throbs within us. Each has his own soul, and breath, and heart. Each has something special in the way he writes or speaks or smiles. He is on earth for a purpose – to grow and not to shrink; to win and not to lose. Nothing in nature can match any one of us. SCROLL V “I will live this day as if it is my last” Paul wrote: “Walk with care, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of your time? (Eph. 5:15,16) Every day is given to us is precious. It is not to be wasted. To grieve over yesterday’s defeats is to throw good me after bad. To worry about tomorrow is to fret over problems that may never occur. We have duties to fulfill, people to love and to help, friends who need us and who will not be here tomorrow. This day may be our last, and our last must be our best.
