THE TWO MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Week after week we get E mails from Members regarding these two questions. It seems clear they want to resign but are worried that their Union will NOT represent them fairly. They also seem rightfully concerned that their own Union will discipline them for opting out. Question: When I resign my Union Membership and become an Objector will I still be represented by TWU? Will I receive all the benefits of the Contract? Yes, TWU International and Local 556 are required by Federal Law to protect your Contractual rights and benefits just as if you were a Member. They cannot treat you any differently than a Member. If they do, any non-Member can file a Duty of Fair Representation (DFR) lawsuit. They must continue to represent you fairly and without discrimination on all matters subject to collective bargaining. You cannot be denied any benefits under the Labor Contract. They must answer your questions on the Union phone regarding grievances and they must allow you access to the Union website where Contract Information is updated and highlighted. QUESTION: Can I be disciplined by my Union or Local if I become a non-Member Objector? No. TWU cannot discipline you for becoming a Non-Member Objectors. You are not also not subject to Union rules as written in the International Constitution or Local 556 Bylaws
