THE University of Nairobi has continued to out shine its competitors as it is ranked the best institution of higher learning in Kenya. An international web ranking-Webometrics placed the university at position one against its rivals Kenyatta and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Universities which are ranked second and third respectively. “The University of Nairobi is the best ranked local and regional University according to the latest Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics),”the University said in its website yesterday. Egerton and Strathmore Universities made up the top five of the crème de la crème universities in the country. UoN is also ranked the best in East and central African region beating its rival Makerere university. It placed ninth in Africa out of 1,326 and 1,167 out of over 22,000 universities in the world.Makerere is at position 13. Overall in Africa, the University of Cape Town leads in the rankings followed by Cairo University. The Stallenbosch University,Univ ersity of Pretoria and the University if Witwatersrand closes the top five best ubivesities in Africa. Harvard University is in the first position worldwide. The web rankings complement the government Performance Contracting ranking in which UoN has consistently maintained position one ahead of other public universities and institutions. In the last results, UoN posted an “Excellent” rank a position that has never been achieved by any public entity in the Performance Contracting exercise. The University is also in position 1 as per the latest 4ICU web rankings,said the university website The improved rankings comes against a backdrop of increased enrolment currently standing at over 68,000 students in different courses, improved academic infrastructure and highly qualified academic staff comprising of 126 Professors, and 246 Associate Professors. Last year, the University of Nairobi graduated a record 14,207 students among them 3,373 Masters, 92 PhDs and 2 DSc’s. It also has a research portfolio of KES 3.5 billion and over 1,350 International linkages out of which 250 are active,read the website post.
