THE VERDICT: So...I went to see Dr. Larry Stevens (surgeon) at IU Medical North this morning. Diagnosis: 2 groin hernias (1 left, 1 right) Acute Abductor Tendonitis What does this mean? a. Im getting old and probably dont have the genetic make up to be an ultramarathon runner b. I will have to get surgery in the next year (& take 2 wks off work) to repair the hernias c. I have to do physical therapy for the tendonitis (probably home-based/self-educated because of $$$) The good news....I dont have to stop running! I have to start listening to my body, running less, lifting and swimming and stretching and icing. I still plan to run the Just For the Run of It 10K, September 6th and The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, November 1st (that one Ill probably pay for with some pain:) Other than that it is time to switch it up and find new avenues of physical activity obsession .....this I can do. My heart rate is a mere 43 bpm......NOW THATS RUNNER ZONE BABY & when asked what do you medically feel about people who insists on pushing their bodies beyond healthy levels of pain and physical stress? Dr. Stevens answer Its better to wear out than to rust away uhhhhraaaa!
