THE WORLDS END is the third part of what could loosely be described as the Cornetto trilogy which began with SHAUN OF THE DEAD and was followed by HOT FUZZ and all of which have been directed by Edgar Wright. Its also the weakest of the three. The zombie, or in this case alien invasion, joke has worn a bit thin and while there are a lot of good, often very funny lines, and a couple of great comic performances from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, there is also a lot that falls flat. This one is the skit on INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS with a touch of THE STEPFORD WIVES thrown in as five pals go on the tear in their former home town only to find it has now been taken over by robots. Sadly it tends to reprise the gags from the earlier pictures and rather wastes the talents of such fine players as Rosamund Pike, (in her pre-GONE GIRL days), and Pierce Brosnan. Hopefully Wright and Pegg, his co-writer as well as his star, will turn their hand to something more original in the future.
