THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS IN THE BIBLE: 1. A righteousness that comes from your obedience and from you trying to earn your way to attain it. This righteousness is built upon you and your ability to keep the law. This righteousness can only give you the occasional confidence to ask for God’s favor, depending on how well you perceive you have done. 2. A righteousness that comes from faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 3:21-22 (NIV) But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. This righteousness is built upon the rock of all ages - Jesus Christ. This righteousness gives you confidence ALL THE TIME to access His unmerited favor, even when you feel that you are greatly undeserving. It is your faith in the righteousness of Jesus that gives you the right to God’s unmerited favor. Today, because of what Jesus did on the cross, you can expect good things to happen to you. Romans 4:5 (NIV) However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. Romans 4:6 (NIV) David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: Romans 4:7-8 (NIV) "Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. v. 8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him." HIS RIGTEOUSNESS IS YOUR RIGHT TO GOD’S UNMERITED FAVOR!
