THERE IS POWER IN GOD’S BOOKS “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” 2 Peter 3:9 God has marvellous ways of leading people to His throne of grace. The most hardened sinner, the murderer, whatever it is, God loves us all and pleads with all to follow Him. His wish for all of us is a good, upright life of peace and happiness in spite of what is going on around us. Sergio Bajo, of the Philippines, lost his father when he was young. His family was poor, and the problem of survival and supporting his mother haunted him through his growing years. Sergio used varied means to secure a living. He sometime stole food. At other times he engaged in holdups, robbery, and other wicked activities to get money. He became the terror of the neighbourhood wherever he lived. News of his presence in a community was enough to put fear into the hearts of the people. As a bandit he was a fugitive from justice. One day he decided to follow Dominico Rodriguez, a literature evangelist working with The Great Controversy, in order to snatch his bag for him. Sergio was sure there was a lot of money in that bag. But strange as it may seem, each time Sergio got close enough to snatch the literature evangelist’s bag, he became powerless. He could not understand why he felt so weak when he tried to rob Dominico. The best he seemed able to do was to stay within hearing distance as Brother Rodriguez canvassed among the village people. When Brother Rodriguez was told about the plot against him, he showed no concern. Late one afternoon, one of Brother Rodriguez’s customers saw Sergio skulking nearby and pointed him out to the literature evangelist. Brother Rodriguez was startled at first, but that was soon replaced by the promises of God. Mustering all his courage, he approached Sergio and gave a canvass for The Great Controversy. The canvass completely changed Sergio’s attitude, and he at once became friendly and bought the book. As he read the book, the former bandit noticed gradual changes in his own life. He began to realize how far he had strayed from the right path and began to sense a need of power from above to turn over a new leaf. But Satan was unwilling to give up one who had served him so well. A desperate struggle went on for two years between the power of God and the devil. But at last Sergio Bajo accepted the truth and was baptized. After some time, Sergio married one of our faithful sisters and joined brother Dominico Rodriguez in the literature ministry. There was no more robbing people, no more holdups. The people in the community stopped fearing him, and instead of being a terror to the people, he was now teaching them how to find their way to eternal life. What a change! What a miracle for the Master! There certainly is power in God’s books. As the people read them, the Holy Spirit convinces them of sin and places in their hearts the longing to serve God. Let us pray today for those who have not heard God’s call yet. Miracles of Grace
