THERE REMAINETH THEREFORE A REST TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD. FOR HE THAT IS ENTERED INTO HIS REST, HE ALSO HATH CEASED FROM HIS OWN WORKS, AS GOD DID FROM HIS (Heb. 4:9-10). This passage speaks of rest, both physical and spiritual. After God finished His creation, He rested on the seventh day. While we are not under Old Testament Sabbath law, the principle of work followed by rest still remains. However, the writer of Hebrews is here speaking of spiritual rest, and he states that when one enters Gods rest he has ceased from his own works. Our good works can never bring us true rest, but only trusting in the saving work of Jesus Christ on the cross. In Matt. 11:27-29 Jesus tells us Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. We are just spinning our wheels when we try to find spiritual rest in our own works. Only Jesus gives us true rest as we rest fully in Him!
