THESE ANIMALS NEED YOUR HELP – REPORT THE ABUSE - Animal Cruelty Office, Welfare Dept., Dr. Sami & Dr. Osman 011 403 1371 - aksa.welfare@gmail - [email protected] - Ministry of Agriculture Welfare Department Hotline: 800 247 0000 Saudi Wildlife Authority - [email protected] 011 4418700, Location coordinates: 21.380053, 39.223262 As Sororyah District, Jeddah 22523 4711 These photos, originally posted in P.I.N. (Pet in Need) by Essam Al-Ghalib, were taken on January 16, 2015 and are yet another example of animal abuse and neglect in Saudi Arabia. Dogs, cats, birds, genets, hyenas, wild chameleons, dhub lizards, hyraxes, native snakes, owls, hedgehogs, hawks, owls and many other animals are openly sold at this market. All this goes on unregulated and unsupervised. “The Jeddah animal market is a filthy, diseased place where animals are traded openly without any government oversight. Its shameful, disgusting and downright outrageous that this place exists as it does. The place is a legal market and many merchants there are licensed, but from what I saw today, the animal black market is thriving. Walking through there today I saw two male baboons with chains around their necks, in a tiny cage, hugging one another for comfort as little runts poked at them and smacked their cage. The pair were caught last week in Taif and the man was selling them for SR500 each. In another cage was an owl that was trapped yesterday and now sat in a cage about to be sold. There were also two Hyena pups, each for between SR1,700 and SR2,000. Numerous dogs, mostly German Shepherds (and not very good ones at that) ranged in price from SR700 to SR6,000. There was also a Pitbull puppy. Carcasses of dead birds were strewn all over the place, some flattened from the weight of people stepping on them in the crowd. Numerous desert lizards were cramped in a cage, next to them a mix of live and dead chameleons in another cage. One chameleon was beginning to decompose. Its beyond belief that someone can kill a mother Hyena, steal her pups and sell them to the public openly without suffering any repercussions whatsoever. Or that someone can hunt down an owl and sell it. Or trap baboons and put chains around their necks ? Where are the Jeddah Municipality, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Wildlife Commission? Are they sleeping ? Its time for a wake-up call.” ALL of these animals – from domestic pets to wild animals including owls & hyenas are neglected, abused, and not treated properly.
