THIRTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK the leaders of the Eastern Caribbean - TopicsExpress

THIRTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK the leaders of the Eastern Caribbean were in tense discussion with each other on the phone and in Barbados as to what to do in the face of the assassination of Maurice Bishop and other members of his Cabinet. Members of the Bishop faction of the Peoples Revolutionary Government (PRG) had been lined up and shot dead on 19 October 1983, against a wall in the main courtyard of Fort George in St. Georges, Grenada, on the orders of Bernard Coard and others. It caused shock throughout the region such an assassination had never taken place among the independent states of the Commonwealth Caribbean I gathered these photographs from the personal collection of Dame Eugenia Charles for a booklet to commemorate her 70th Birthday in May 1989. The booklet is now out of print. The photo collection is now at the library of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies. I have labelled each photograph as Dame Eugenia described them to me.
