*** THIS DATE IN #REDS HISTORY! JULY 19 *** July 19, 1985 - BUDDY BELL COMES HOME! Third baseman Buddy Bell, a 5 time AL All-Star, Moeller High School product & also the son of popular Reds great Gus Bell, was acquired from Texas amid great fanfare. Reds gave up another local Cincinnatian, Wyoming High Schools RHP Jeff Russell and 4th outfielder Duane Walker. ** Impact: Player-Manager Pete Roses 1985 Reds were the surprise of MLB, contending for the NL WEST title (they would finish 2nd) and third base had been platooned with Nick Esasky and Wayne Krenchicki. Native son Bell added a multi-time all star & provided stability. His glove was still 1st rate, too. It was a pleasure to watch Buddy play defense for 2.5 years. He is the best REDS defensive third baseman i have seen in person. Neck-and-neck with Scott Rolen. I give edge to Buddy, as he was an absolute master on Astroturf. baseball-reference/players/b/bellbu01.shtml *** One more memory, i was at ballpark that night, (A-28,929) July 19, 1985, Buddy made his debut as a RED, Went 1 for 4. Saw Father Gus Bell walking around in Blue Seat level. REDS won in bottom of 9th inning on a thrilling walkoff, Gary Redus hit double off Kent Tekulve , scoring Ron Oester for a 3-2 win over Phillies. (Technically, this trade was made toward end of day on july 18th). baseball-reference/boxes/CIN/CIN198507190.shtml July 19, 1978 - 32 GAMES FOR ROSE HITTING STREAK! On the road against Philadelphia Phils, Pete Rose beats out a 9th-inning bunt to keep his hitting streak alive. THE STREAK looked dead when Pete was retired in the 8th inning while still hitless, but Big Red Machine score 4 runs to give Rose the chance to hit again. Mike Schmidt couldnt handle Roses bunt. Reds won 7 - 2. ***I recall watching this game live on WLWT5. It was very big and people nationwide started to really get into this CHASE of Petes at this very moment. It snowballed.*** baseball-reference/boxes/PHI/PHI197807190.shtml retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1978/Irosep0010161978.htm July 19, 2001 - ADAM DUNN CALLED UP TO REDS! Rockies obtain OF Alex Ochoa from Reds for 2B Todd Walker & minor league OF Robin Jennings. The Reds also call up top OF prospect Adam Dunn, who has hit 32 homers in the minors this year. Dunn will clout 19 homers for the Reds including 12 in August, setting the National League rookie record for most home run in any month. (The old mark of 11 was set by Frank Robinson, in August 1956) Dunn will not appear in the game played on July 19, 2001. His MLB Debut comes July 20th, we will cover that tomororow. The home run followed Dmitri Youngs walk, so it made it a 6-2 game. And it made Perez and his father, Tony, the only father and son combo to hit red-seat homers. Only 15 players have reached the red, and two are named Perez. Thats a special occasion, Eduardo said.
