THIS DAY IN ARKANSAS WEATHER HISTORY... May 27 1891-Highs in most areas were in the 70s to near 80, except for 68 at Camden, and 92 at Newport. 1893-One to three inches of rain fell in much of the central and eastern portions. 1917-A tornado struck Mississippi County, killing 18. 1957-High flows and river flooding began on the Arkansas River and continued through the 31st. 1996-Tornadoes hit Manning and in Clark and Dallas counties. 1997-Many severe thunderstorms moved across the state. Small tornadoes touched down near Jacksonville and Vanndale in Cross County. May 28 1907-Lows were mostly in the 40s. However, temperatures fell into the 30s in the extreme north, with 39 at Eureka Springs and Mammoth Spring, 38 at Gravette, and 34 at Harrison. 1924-Tornadoes struck Farmington, killing one, and Fort Smith. 1979-A flash flood occurred at Dumas. 1982-Tornadoes touched down in west central and north central sections. 1998-10.38 inches of rain fell at Texarkana, causing some flash flooding. 10.30 inches fell at Ashdown. May 29 1898-Highs were in the 90s. Texarkana reached 98. 1926-The temperature hit 107 at Newport. This was the sixth day out of seven consecutive days over 100 degrees. 1998-Three to six inches of rain fell in southeast Arkansas. McArthur picked up 6.63 inches of rain in 24 hours. 2012-Temperatures at most locations were in the mid and upper 90s. Little Rock recorded a high of 97, which was the warmest may temperature since 1998. Russellville recorded a high of 98, which was the warmest May temperature since 1951. The Mena airport reached 99.
