THIS DAY IN MISSOURI HISTORY - September 15, 1806 - At the future site of Downtown Kansas City men of the Lewis and Clark expedition were blaming the change from two years of cold, wet climate to that of Missouri for all the discomfort they were feeling. September 15, 1826 - Birthday of Kersey Coates. Coates developed Quality Hill, the Kansas City Board of Trade, and was an officer in the Battle of Lone Jack. He convinced the Hannibal-St. Joseph Railroad to come to Kansas City and had a railroad bridge built there. This caused Kansas City to become the dominant city of the region rather than Leavenworth. September 15, 1858 - Hannibal-LaGrange College opened as the LaGrange Male and Female Seminary. September 15, 1930 - Birthday of Sylvester Waterhouse, a prolific writer and Missosuri historian. September 15, 1962 - Hootenanny! The St. Louis Globe-Democrat reported that over half of the bars in Gaslight Square wre featuring folk singers.
