Cash to the poor scheme receives Sh850m boost Kenya’s cash transfer to the poor has received a Sh850 million boost from the World Bank. It seeks to shield poor people from harsh living conditions and the Sh850 million boost ($10 million) will be used spent on orphans and vulnerable children. Up to 153,000 Kenyan households receive regular cash in social welfare. World Bank country director for Kenya Diarietou Gaye said the boost was part of a comprehensive national safety net to reduce poverty in Kenya. “It is very encouraging that regular cash transfers to households with orphans are helping to protect these children from the worst effects of extreme poverty,” Ms Gaye said. In this financial year, the government said it would use Sh13.4 billion to cushion the poor, orphans, albinos and the elderly besides supporting bright but needy students in school. Sh8 billion was allocated in the 2013/14 financial year to double those receiving the cash from 155,000 to 310,000 households. Monthly payments have helped households to send orphans to school and provide basic nutrition and health care. This has helped to reduce child labour on farms.
