THIS IS NOT A LOCAL WARNING!!! FOR THOSE WHOM MAY HAVE FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN THE SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA NOW IS THE TIME TO TAG AND SHARE. THIS IS A EXTREMELY DANGEROUS THUNDERSTORM. A WIND GUST OF OVER 160KPH HAS BEEN RECORDED.... PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING WARNING. TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST DETAILED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for DESTRUCTIVE WIND and HEAVY RAINFALL For people in parts of the Sydney Metropolitan area. Issued at 9:52 pm Tuesday, 14 October 2014. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 9:45 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Sydney Airport, Canterbury, Kurnell and Maroubra. These thunderstorms are slow moving. They are forecast to affect Sydney Olympic Park, Drummoyne, Randwick and Strathfield by 10:15 pm and Parramatta, Sydney City, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Ryde by 10:45 pm. Destructive winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely. Wattamolla recorded a wind gust of 161 km/h (87 knots) at 9:02pm. Kurnell recorded a wind gust of 115 km/h (62 knots) at 8:52pm. Sydney Airport recorded a wind gust of 98 km/h (53 knots) at 9:17pm. San Souci recorded 59mm in 1 hour between 8pm and 9pm. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep clear of fallen power lines. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Dont walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 10:55 pm. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureaus website at bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
