THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Dif Juz & Elizabeth Fraser – “Love Insane”. Taken from the album “Extractions” released July 1985. What proved in the end to be the only full proper Dif Juz album was a gentle marvel, showing the quartet building on the strengths of its initial releases to create a gripping, involving instrumental masterpiece. Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) added vocals for “Love Insane.” She takes the soft approach on this number, her gentle vocals mixing with Thomas’ sax just so. Dif Juz may not have been the most successful band on the 4AD roster, but their music typified the label’s quixotic approach. An all-instrumental quartet whose evocative compositions – sometimes ambient, sometimes angular – were invariably quietly mesmerising, they made a great deal of sense in the context of the so-called ‘post-rock’ music which emerged some 15 years after the group disbanded.
