THIS IS THE DAY A sinner can no more repent and believe without the Holy Spirits aid than he can create a world. - Charles Spurgeon I read this (edited now) on the internet, it drives home a point I want to make this morning. Read on: My parents, both drunk, were having a fight. At another time I, along with my siblings, were called from our beds in the middle of the night by our drunk parents. They were getting divorced, we were asked to choose which parent we wanted to go with. Despair and sadness moved into my life like a fog. Even thoughts of suicide lingered for a season. My survival has not been without some baggage. In particular there was a deep anger and bitterness - in my heart - toward my father. That anger created a barrier between my father and me and also affected (my) other relationships. I will never forget a conversation I had with a roommate at Colorado State University during a two week course I was taking. He said, “Mike, you need to love your dad.” I knew I didn’t, and I was not sure I could. But, months later I looked my dad in the eyes and told him, “I love you.” He cried. If God could love me and forgive me how could I not do the same for my father? The most logical thing to do is hold on to a grudge, its easier and more attractive to do, like weve been shown in Hollywood movies. Joseph Morgan, hit the nail on the head when he said, forgiveness is beyond the weak, only the strong can wield its power. In other words, only strong people can forgive - with help from the Holy Spirit. Thats why Jesus could forgive even those driving nails through his body. Beloved, forgiveness isnt for the other person, but for you. Holding on to resentment is like taking red hot coals in your fist with the aim of hurling it at your enemy. The problem with that is, you might miss the enemy but you will never escape a burnt palm. I read about a lady who was ill for about fifteen years, but was healed the instant she told her enemy, I forgive you. This statement might be the key to that lingering breakthrough youve so desired. If you will just drop this baggage, who knows? I thought I was alright till the day I looked my dad in the face and said, I forgive you. We both cried, but another thing happened, I felt like someone lifted a weight off me. Id been in bondage without having the slightest idea that I was. This is the day, let go of that grudge now WISDOM NUGGET: Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. - NIV : Father, I forgive everyone who has deeply hurt me, and for whom I had resentment till now, in Jesus name.
