THIS THURSDAY * Jan. 13 * 6 pm * DPW Recovery Roads Meeting * Letter from LCIA President Brian Anderson * REVISED Dear Neighbors, I had the pleasure of sitting down today with Cheryn Robles, Community Outreach Manager for the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works, and Laura Mellem, the Neighborhood Liaison for the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Engagement. Ann LeBlanc, the President of Fix My Streets, and I were shown a sneak peak of the presentation that the City will unveil to Lakeview residents on Tuesday, January 13th at 6:00 p.m., at the Lakeview Christian Center located at 5885 Fleur De Lis Drive. I am happy to report that by all accounts the event shouldn’t last more than an hour and the presentation should be both encouraging for All Lakeview residents and educational for those residents who reside within the construction boundaries of Harrison Avenue, Orleans Avenue, Kenilworth Street, & Pontchartrain Boulevard. If your home is within these boundaries or if you are interested in learning more about future DPW Recovery Roads Program projects, I strongly recommend that you attend. This meeting will not be about potholes on Fleur De Lis, alleyways in South Lakeview, or broken water mains on 33rd Street. The DPW has planned this meeting solely to inform neighbors, in the affected construction area, of the type of work that will be performed and how it will impact their everyday lives. Also, residents will be advised that this work is not going to fix all of our streets, just those determined by FEMA to be damaged due to Hurricane Katrina. Although my meeting directly related to the Phase II Repairs- Lakeview Quad 1 (Paving Only), Ann and I did ask many questions in regards to future construction and Lakeview. The following is what I took away from our discussions: • These Recovery Roads Program repairs are funded by FEMA. • This is not the only FEMA project slated for Lakeview, DPW has already spent over $6.75 million on 70124 and has another 22.4 million, in the design pipeline, for future work. • There are other repairs slated for Lakeview, not funded by FEMA, that will be performed by either DPW and/or the Sewerage and Water Board over the coming years. • Departments are communicating and more importantly coordinating. DPW knows what Sewerage and Water is doing and vice versa. Both are meeting with FEMA to coordinate efforts and eliminate the need for double work. I for one am very encouraged by what we saw today. The fact that these two City employees took time out of their busy schedules, on a Friday, to meet with LCIA and FMS was very positive. I encourage all citizens interested in learning about the first of many DPW Recovery Roads Program Projects to attend. Make no mistake, Lakeview has a voice in City Hall and it is not because we scream the loudest, but because we engage constructively, question respectfully and bite our tongues from time to time. Sincerely, Brian E. Anderson Lakeview Civic Improvement Association President
