THIS right here. Jamaican child asks not to be called African American (because she is NOT) and the teacher tries to impose that name on her, or nigger. Just reminds me about how annoying it is sometimes to be a West Indian in certain parts of this country. People simply do not acknowledge your uniqueness or your culture/experience/history which is very different from what African Americans had to go through here. Just reading this reminded me of the frustration I would always feel at college in Ohio, where people like us are basically non-existent...and just assumed to be AA. Its just so annoying to have a term imposed on you, just because you look similar to a certain group of people. I am MIND-BOGGLED by folks in the midwest who simply do not understand that West Indians are NOT African-Americans!!! Would you call a Trinidadian from London African-American?? Big ups to this teenager for setting these folks straight. Also, reading the comments from a bunch of actual African-Americans and white people about how we should consider ourselves AA is... just golden.
