THOMPSON STATEMENT ON NATIONAL GUARD BUDGET SHORTFALL WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) released the following statement regarding the Army National Guard budget shortfall: “I have learned that the National Guard Bureau will soon request a Congressional reprogramming of funds to satisfy the Army National Guard budget shortfall. The reallocated funds will compensate the more than 9,000 Mississippi National Guardsmen potentially affected by the budget shortfall. Currently, drills have not been cancelled, but postponed pending the National Guard’s budget request. As the National Guard’s request works its way through the Department of Defense and the Office of Management and Budget, and ultimately through Congress, I encourage a swift approval. I plan to support the National Guard’s reprogramming request and will urge my colleagues in Congress to act without delay or disruption to Mississippi Guardsmen. The Mississippi Army National Guard has a rich history of service and is of vital importance to the State of Mississippi and to the nation,” said Congressman Thompson. The National Guard has indicated that the budget shortfall is a result of fewer guardsmen being deployed than were accounted for in the budget. ###
