THREE LETTERS WITH ROOM FOR THOUGHT GREENVILLE NEWS, 9/5/14 I. Our country will benefit if the haters fall behind This is a response to the “angry man” who gets many letters published in The Greenville News . His latest letter was about the “Right Wing needs to take over our country.” I offer you this: All the people who hate any kind of rational thinking about solutions to this very dangerous and complex world are just like the right-wing dictators that we supported before we didn’t. Do the names Suharto, Marcos, Diem ring a bell? How about Bashar al Assad: He is still in control of Syria and he (and his father) were supported before their civil war for 44 years. “Iraqi Freedom” was brought to us by the right wing. How did that work out? There are many more dictators that stomped all over their people and spewed hate with a strong fist that the U.S. seemed to tolerate as long as they weren’t labeled “left wing.” The “angry man” also brings up Communism! Are we still fighting the Vietnam war and using the Domino Theory? The political right is great at reframing issues (Fox News) and voting districts. They are experts at creating new levels of repression to enlarge their base. As a result, many middle class “average Americans” (predominantly white) accept arguments for repression as “common sense.” May the enlightened that represent our great diversity of this democracy lead and the haters fall behind. Larry Sherbur ne Easley 2. Police deserve to have the right equipment for the job I have read several articles lately about the increasing militarization of the police — most suggesting it’s “bad.” Here we go again — falling into “the hardware did it trap” that seems so irrationally popular these days. Our police should be well equipped and should be able to “outgun” the bad guys. They have a right to go home to their family at day’s end, and anyone familiar with conflict will tell you the best way to ensure that happens is to meet conflict with overwhelming force. None of the above gives police license to violate an individual’s human, constitutional or civil rights. If that happens, it’s the human hands on the hardware that caused it — not the hardware. Fire or prosecute the human( s) as appropriate. Taking the hardware away punishes everyone (good police and lawabiding citizens) for the sins of one or two or a few. If the police “can’t be trusted” with this kind of equipment, then we have the wrong police officers — not the wrong equipment. Bob Lambour Easley 3. Ask yourself these key questions Why? 1. Do police, deputies and SCHP talk on the phone and speed while driving (be an example)? 2. Why does SCDOT have people driving the highways to help motorists? When is the last time you had a flat tire (cant fix roads, but brother-inlaw jobs are important? 3. Why isnt it racist for Sen. Tim Scott to imply companies are not giving fair treatment for all?
