TIME TRAVELING, October 5: 1813 During the War of 1812, Chief Tecumseh of the Shawnee Indians is killed at the Battle of Thames near Ontario, Canada, when American forces defeat the British and allied Indian warriors. 1877 After a 1,000-mile retreat toward the Canadian border pursued by more than 2,000 U.S. soldiers, Nez Perce Indian Chief Joseph surrenders to the U.S. Army in the Bear Paw Mountains of Montana. 1892 The notorious Dalton gang attempts to rob two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville, Kansas, but meets resistance from townspeople who kill four of the five bandits. 1921 The New York Giants face off against the New York Yankees as the World Series is broadcast on radio for the first time. 1930 Laura Ingalls becomes the first woman to make a transcontinental airplane flight. 1947 In the first-ever televised presidential address from the White House, President Harry Truman calls on Americans to cut back on their use of grain, forego meat on Tuesdays, and give up eggs and poultry on Thursdays in order to help starving Europeans. 1963 Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge reports to President John F. Kennedy from Saigon that South Vietnamese generals are planning a coup against President Ngo Dinh Diem and want assurances the U.S. would not thwart such a coup. Kennedy indicates the U.S. would not oppose the coup. 1970 Anwar Sadat takes office as president of Egypt replacing Gamal Abdel Nassar. 1983 Polish Solidarity founder Lech Walesa wins the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with labor unions and human rights. 1986 The Iran-Contra scandal begins to unravel as Eugene Hausenfus is captured by Sandinista troops in Nicaragua after the plane in which he is flying is shot down. He confesses that he was shipping military supplies into Nicaragua for use by the Contras, an anti-Sandinista force created and funded by the U.S., and also claims the operation was run by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). 1989 The Dalai Lama (Lhama Dhondrub, Tenzin Gyatso) is named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent campaign to end the Chinese domination of Tibet. 1991 Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev announces his country will cut its nuclear arsenal in response to George H.W. Bush’s announcement that the U.S. was reducing arms. 1993 China sets off an underground nuclear explosion. 2011 Steve Jobs, visionary co-founder of Apple, Inc., which revolutionized the computer, music, and mobile communications industries with such devices as the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, dies at age 56 of complications from pancreatic cancer.
